Young Dolph: 2nd suspect in Memphis rapper’s slaying in custody

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Both of the gunmen wanted for the murder of Memphis rapper Young Dolph are now in custody, law enforcement sources confirmed to WHBQ-TV early Tuesday evening.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Justin Johnson, 23, was captured at around 3 p.m. Tuesday in Indiana.

Three independent sources confirmed to WHBQ-TV that the second suspected gunman, Cornelius Smith, was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder for a crime that occurred on Nov. 17, the day Young Dolph was killed.

Johnson’s arrest comes less than a week after Marshals identified him as one of the people responsible for the death of Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., the TV station reported.

The Memphis rapper died after two people opened fire on him while he was inside Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies.

According to WHBQ-TV, Johnson faces charges of first-degree murder and theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000.

In addition to a first-degree murder charge, 33-year-old Smith is charged with attempted first-degree murder, unlawfully carrying or possessing a weapon, employment of a firearm with intent to commit a felony and theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000, the TV station reported.

Prior to his alleged involvement in the murder of Young Dolph, Johnson, who reportedly raps under the stage name Straight Drop, was arrested for a 2017 triple shooting at a Memphis bowling alley, but he served only months of his five-year sentence, WHBQ-TV reported.
