Walmart drops $35 minimum for 2-hour delivery service

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is nixing the minimum order requirement for its Express Delivery service, the retail behemoth announced Monday.

Effective immediately, customers must no longer order a minimum of $35 in items in order to receive them within two hours.

“Many customers use Express Delivery for when they’re in a pinch, whether it be a missing ingredient for a weeknight dinner or a pack of diapers,” Tom Ward, senior vice president of customer product at Walmart, said in a prepared statement.

“Customers told us sometimes the items they needed in a hurry didn’t meet the minimum, so we’re removing it, making it even easier for customers to get what they need when they need it,” he added.

A $35 minimum purchase will still apply for the company’s contact-free curbside pickup and other delivery options, Fox Business reported.

According to USA Today, Walmart’s Express Delivery is currently available at 3,000 locations and typically costs $10 in addition to a delivery charge, but Walmart+ customers pay a flat $10 for the speedier service.

At the onset of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the retailer expanded its fledgling Express Delivery service to 1,000 stores to help meet demand amid widespread lockdowns that kept customers out of brick-and-mortar stores. The three-fold increase in the number of locations offering the service since May 2020 now means Walmart reaches nearly 70% of the U.S. population as it seeks to gain a competitive edge over rival Amazon Prime, Fox Business reported.
