The Hyattsville Police Department said in a news release that officers were called to a home on Nov. 27 for a report of an armed person.

When officers arrived, they found a 15-year-old asleep in his room on his back, and a short-barreled AR-15-style rifle to the left of his body, police said. A black 30-round magazine was inserted into the gun’s magazine well. Inside the magazine were two .223/.556 rounds, police said.

The teenager’s parents told police they had found their son sleeping with the gun, WUSA reported.

Police said an officer immediately retrieved the weapon and rendered it safe. Officers said they were not able to read the gun’s serial number, because it was covered by a “black glue substance.”

“Ultimately we don’t know what our officers may have prevented or intervened in by confiscating this weapon,” Hyattsville Police Chief Jarod Towers told WRC.

The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office told WUSA that it is charging the teenager as a juvenile with possessing a firearm as a person under 21, and altering the gun’s serial number.
