EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A wife and a convicted murderer were both charged in the 2019 death of an Indiana firefighter, police say.

According WEVV, during a news conference on Thursday, Evansville Police Department said according to WEVV, that two people had been charged with the murder of Evansville Fire Department firefighter Robert Doerr.

According to WEVV, Doerr’s wife, Elizabeth Fox-Doerr, and Larry Richmond Sr. are both being charged for his murder.

Doerr was found shot to death outside of his home on February 26, 2019, according to Evansville Courier & Press.

WEVV said that Doerr had just come home after working a 12-hour shift with EFD prior to the shooting.

Both Richmond and Fox-Doerr have both been charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder, EPD said in the news conference, according to Evansville Courier & Press. They are both currently in jail. Richmond has been incarcerated since 2019 for federal gun charges.

Elizabeth was arrested in July for perjury related to the case and had pleaded not guilty, according to WFIE.

Evansville Courier & Press said that according to affidavits they had received, Doerr was shot to death at least three times in his driveway when he got out of his truck.

Richmond’s son, Larry Richmond Jr., allegedly told police that his father had sent him and his mother letters — including one that stated it was possible for him to be linked to Doerr’s murder if the police found a gun he had stolen — according to affidavits obtained by Evansville Courier & Press. An inmate who was incarcerated with Richmond also told the police that Richmond had allegedly confessed to him about Doerr’s murder.

Evansville Courier & Press reported that based on the affidavits, Fox-Doerr was arrested after the murder and was charged with obstruction of justice. However, that charge was dropped based on a deleted phone call. According to the affidavit obtained by Evansville Courier & Press, investigators learned that the phone call was between Fox-Doerr and Richmond Sr.

According to WFIE, Richmond served a 22-year prison sentence for murder and was released in 2018, a year before Doerr was shot to death outside his home.

The FBI, Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office and the Vanderburgh County Cyber Crimes Task Force all assisted EPD with the investigation, according to Evansville Courier & Press.
