Meyer, 56, who won a pair of national college football titles at the University of Florida and one at Ohio State, was named head coach of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, the team confirmed Thursday.

Meyer takes over a team that had the worst mark in franchise history (1-15) and the worst mark in the NFL during 2020.

Meyer, a native of Ashtabula, Ohio, won three national championships and compiled a 187-32 college coaching record during his career at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State. He took the Gators to a pair of national titles after the 2006 and 2008 seasons and led Florida to a 65-15 record in six seasons. He led Ohio State to an 83-9 record in seven seasons that included a national crown after the 2014 season.

“I’ve analyzed this decision from every angle -- the time is right in Jacksonville, and the time is right for me to return to coaching,” Meyer said. “I’m excited about the future of this organization and our long-term prospect for success.”

Meyer was also 17-6 at Bowling Green in 2001-02, and 22-2 at Utah in 2003-04.

Meyer becomes the sixth coach in Jaguars’ history. He replaces Doug Marrone, who was fired after the 2020 season.

The Jaguars allowed a franchise-record 492 points last season, becoming the fifth team since the NFL expanded to a 16-game schedule in 1978 to allow at least 20 points in every game, according to ESPN. Offensively, the Jaguars ranked 28th or worse in yards per game, rushing and scoring, the sports network reported.
