PHILADELPHIA — Wednesday night’s major league baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals was postponed as the Nationals deal with a COVID-19 outbreak, several media outlets reported.
Nationals shortstop Trea Turner tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, NBC Sports reported.
ESPN, citing anonymous sources, said multiple players and coaches tested positive Wednesday. That came a day after Turner was pulled during the first inning of Tuesday game’s after the team learned about his positive test.
“Multiple players and coaches have tested positive today after Trea Turner did yesterday,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweeted. “Size of outbreak remains to be seen, but may wind up as biggest in MLB this year.”

Nationals manager Dave Martinez told The Athletic that the team has 12 members who have tested positive for COVID-19, including four players.
Major League Baseball announced the postponement about 90 minutes before Wednesday’s game, USA Today reported.
The Phillies tweeted that the game would be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Thursday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia beginning at 12:05 p.m. EDT.

The Nationals were forced to begin the 2021 season five days late after the team dealt with a COVID-19 outbreak before Opening Day, ESPN reported.
