Amazon redesigns app icon after it draws comparisons to Hitler’s mustache

Amazon has changed its app icon after receiving criticism that its new logo resembled Adolf Hitler’s mustache.

In January, the e-commerce giant replaced its longtime shopping cart image with a smiling face arrow and a ridged piece of blue tape, The Washington Post reported. The tape, situated above the smile, resembled the infamous toothbrush mustache worn by Hitler, the infamous World War II German dictator, WNBC reported.

Amazon quietly changed its logo this week, folding the tape and smoothing out the jagged blue tape.

Amazon spokesperson Craig Andrews did not directly address the Hitler comparison claims, the Post reported.

“We designed the new icon to spark anticipation, excitement, and joy when customers start their shopping journey on their phone, just as they do when they see our boxes on their doorstep,” Andrews said in a statement.

The “Hitler” logo sparked plenty of conversation on Twitter.

“Am I the only one who sees Hitler smiling?” one Twitter user wrote in late January.

Economist Corey Quinn, of The Duckbill Group, wrote that he was unable to “unsee” the Hitler face and made a series of puns about the graphic design, People reported.

“I’m stunned that the Amazon.com marketing folks were alt-right with it,” he joked.

“Looks like a happy little cardboard Adolf to me,” another Twitter user wrote.

The new icon debuted worldwide on the iPhone on Feb. 22, and Monday on Android, WNBC reported.

“Amazon’s new iOS app logo attempt 2: now with 15% less Hitler,” one person tweeted.
