Reverse: Big Ten will try to play fall football after all

The Big Ten is going to give fall football a shot after all. Less than five weeks after pushing fall sports to spring in the name of player safety during the pandemic, the conference ran a reverse Wednesday and said it plans to open its football season the weekend of Oct. 23-24. All 14 teams will be scheduled to play eight regular-season games in eight weeks, plus have the opportunity to play a ninth game on Dec. 19 when the conference championship game is played. The College Football Playoff selections are scheduled for Dec. 20, which means the Big Ten’s best should be back in the hunt for a national championship — if all goes well. Big Ten Include: Ohio State, Penn State, University of Michigan. Michigan State University. University of Wisconsin, University of Nebraska, University of Illinois, Indiana University.

Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone in concert again at Tobin Center in San Antonio following coronavirus shutdown

Herman’s Hermits Starring Peter Noone will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday in the H-E-B Performance Hall of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, 1 Auditorium Circle. Tickets range from $35 to $75 at tobi.tobincenter.org.

The concert is part of the first weekend of ticketed public performances at the Tobin Center since the venue shut down in March as part of the effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. The other performance is the one-man show “An Evening with C.S. Lewis,” playing Friday and Sunday. Capacity is capped at around 20 percent to allow for social distancing, with two seats between each group of ticket holders. There will be temperature checks at the entrance, and masks are required. Plexiglass shields have been installed at the box office and concession stands. To stave off potentially problematic lines at the concession stand, ticket holders will be able to make purchases through an app called Noble: Easy Order. Easy Pay. H-E-B offering flu shots at massive drive-thru event at Freeman Coliseum later this month

H-E-B is hosting a large drive-thru flu shot event at the Freeman Coliseum from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, the grocery store chain announced in a news release Wednesday. Dozens of H-E-B pharmacists will be set up in the parking lot of Freeman Coliseum, located 3201 E Houston St., to administer the flu shots, the release said. Most major insurance will be accepted, and flu shots will be available at no cost for those without insurance, according to the release. People wanting to receive a flu shot must register and schedule an appointment at heb.com/pharmacy. Those who register can drive up and receive their vaccination without leaving their vehicle, the release noted.

Origami exhibit opening at the San Antonio Botanical Garden OrigamiintheGarden² will stay open Saturday-May 9

The San Antonio Botanical Garden will unveil a new garden exhibit this weekend. OrigamiintheGarden², which features metals as origami paper art, will open on Saturday with an array of activities. The opening weekend schedule will include guided and self-guided tours, origami-inspired activities, a cash bar, food prepared by celebrity chef Jason Dady and other food. The activities will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Storytelling by Sue Kuentz will also take place on Saturday only, according to the Botanical Garden. OrigamiintheGarden² was created by American artists Jennifer and Kevin Box and is making its Texas debut here in San Antonio. It will last until May 9. Regular admission rates will apply for opening weekend, including $15 for adults, $13 for students and those with a military ID, and $12 for children 3-13.

Luby’s executive assures fans that the Texas icon is still open

Texans everywhere felt their hearts break this week when Luby’s announced the chain is liquidating and distributing proceeds to its investors. But you still have time to get your LuAnn platter and Jell-O before we have to officially say goodbye, according to Luby’s COO Todd Coutee, who assured fans on Facebook that the Texas staple will be here awhile longer.

AT&T Center to be used as polling site

The arena will be open for early voting from Oct. 13 through Oct. 30, and on the Nov. 3 national election day. It will mark the first time in history the AT&T Center will be used as a polling place. With 13,725 square feet of space on the Plaza Level concourse, county officials hope the arena will allow for a larger voter turnout while continuing to follow local social distancing guidelines.

South Texas woman catches 9-foot, 300-pound shark from Corpus Christi beach

On Labor Day, Josie Silva reeled in a 9-foot female tiger shark. The 37-year-old told mySA.com she caught the estimated 300-pound shark around 7:30 p.m. from the shoreline near Bob Hall Pier in Corpus Christi, close to mile marker 300 on the beach. Silva, who is from Orange Grove about 38 miles west of Corpus Christi, also said it was a personal record. The fisherwoman said the fight between her and the shark lasted about 45 minutes, adding it was a tough catch due to the weight of the shark.

RockerDogz Gourmet Street Dogz now open on South Side of San Antonio

RockerDogz Gourmet Street Dogz has returned to the San Antonio dining scene with a permanent brick-and-mortar home on the South Side. The new restaurant is located at 3014 Roosevelt Ave., near Southcross. RockerDogz features a menu of tricked out hot dogs, including his signature Thai Kick Boxer, made with 13 ingredients, and dogs featuring chili and blue cheese. Weekend specials include beef links topped with carne guisada (available on Saturdays) and barbacoa (available on Sundays)

South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is struggling

The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is struggling to bring in donors as it tries to pull itself out of a blood shortage. The center had 1.78 days' worth of blood, as of Monday morning, compared to its goal of a three-day supply. STBTC has been trying since Friday to get 500 donors per day in order to catch up on its shortage, which the center said is mostly due to a shortage of donors, though a higher need for blood has played a role. Because of COVID-19, large blood drives at high schools and other community settings have not been possible. What happens when we run out of names for tropical storms?

It’s safe to say that the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season has been one for the books. With one and a half months of hurricane season still left to go, we’re running out of names to use as storms develop. In fact, we’ve only got one name left -- Wilfred -- and it looks very likely that Wilfred will develop soon.

So what do meteorologists do when we use all of the names? Every year the World Meteorological Organization creates lists of names that are common to the regions where the storms will occur. The WMO has determined that when a hurricane season is particularly active and all alphabetical names are used, storms will be then be named in the order of the Greek alphabet. ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA, DELTA ETC..
