San Antonio — Coronavirus updates: Coronavirus risk level falls to moderate in Bexar County Risk levels fall: San Antonio recorded 70 new coronavirus cases on Monday, as the area’s COVID-19 surge continued to abate. Deaths continued to rise, as officials reported that another 17 people in Bexar County had succumbed to the virus, bringing the local death toll to 617. Some of those deaths date occurred as early as June, but were recently verified as being COVID-19 related.

Plate sale planned to help pay for funeral of BCSO deputy who died in car wreck last week

A barbecue plate sale is planned for Saturday to help with funeral expenses for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy who died in a car wreck last week. The food plate sale is to help the Calderon family with funeral and medical expenses, according to the event's Facebook page. The plates will be sold from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at R&J Music Pavilion, located on the city's far South Side at 18086 Pleasanton Rd. The $8 barbecue plates will include chicken, rice and beans.

‘Valley Girl’ star Deborah Foreman to host Schertz EVO Entertainment drive-in movie double-feature

EVO Entertaiment is extending its summer drive-in film festival with a double-feature of “Valley Girl” and “April Fool’s Day.” Actress Deborah Foreman, who starred in both movies, will attend the screenings Aug. 28 at EVO’s theater in Schertz. The cult favorite “Valley Girl,” released in 1983, is a Romeo and Juliet story set in the San Fernando Valley. Foreman stars as a pretty-in-pink, mall-prowling teen who falls for a rocker from the city played by a young Nicolas Cage. The movie is full of totally tubular dialogue and music by the Plimsouls, the Psychedelic Furs and Modern English. In the 1986 slasher film “April Fool’s Day,” Foreman is Muffy, the host of a spring break party for her college classmates. It’s all fun, games and practical jokes until someone starts picking off the partygoers. The double-feature begins at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at EVO Schertz, 18658 Interstate 35. Tickets cost $25 per car at evocinemas.com/driveinfilmfest . Passes for a socially distanced meet-and-greet cost an additional $10.

More San Antonio movie theaters reopening starting this weekend with ‘Unhinged’

Regal will open four of its six San Antonio-area theaters on Friday. The Alamo Drafthouse’s Park North location will open Aug. 26. And AMC’s theater at the Shops at Rivercenter will follow Aug. 28.

Tropical depression forms near Gulf of Mexico

Tropical depression 14 formed in the Caribbean Sea on Thursday morning, and a forecast cone showing the storm's probable center has Texas in its sights.

The National Hurricane Center predicts the system will likely become a tropical storm by Friday. Meteorologists believes the storm could reach the Southeast Texas coast by Tuesday evening. Any possible impacts to South-Central Texas would occur during the middle part of next week, according to the National Weather Service. A second disturbance in the Atlantic Ocean formed into Tropical Depression 13 overnight. It is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm early Friday morning.

Mi Tierra has new margarita bikes in Market Square that let customers pedal to mix their drinks

Mi Tierra has found a way to burn calories and enjoy margaritas.

La Familia Cortez, which owns Mi Tierra, La Margarita, Pico de Gallo and Mi Familia, is promoting the new Patron and Casa Noble bikes which have a pedal-powered blender attached to the top of the handlebars. Each pedal-pushing patron will burn about 10 calories in the process of making one pitcher. Once the light work is done, customers can enjoy their 20-ounce margarita while strolling Market Square, which is open container-certified by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.  The $10 margaritas are traditional lime, and fruit flavors can be mixed in.
