National Wreaths-Across America Day – Saturday, December 13, 2014
National Wreaths-Across America Day will be on Saturday, December 13. This year the Association of Government Accountants of the San Antonio Chapter is making an awareness to recognize fallen heroes through the “Wreaths-Across America” Organization. A special as this is the 150th Anniversary of the Arlington National Cemetery. In Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery a small city of over 23,000 fallen heroes reside in our community. Wreaths-Across America needs your help to reach their goal of placing 500,000 wreaths on veterans graves. Every time you help them honor our veterans and active military, you are also honoring their families and preparing a new generation to appreciate our freedoms. Youth invited to participate in NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Event
Children ages 6-15 are invited to show off their football skills during the annual NFL Punt, Pass and Kick event organized by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex, 200 Noblewood Dr. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the competition begins at 10 a.m. Participants punt, pass and kick a football to accumulate points by distance and accuracy. There are five age categories: 6- and 7-year-olds; 8- and 9-year-olds; 10- and 11-year-olds; 12- and 13-year-olds; and 14- and 15-year-olds. Top scorers in each age division and gender will advance to the Sectional competition. Winners of the Sectional competition will receive medals and be in the running for the Texas Championships. Family Fest and Walk for Kidneys
The State of Texas Kidney Foundation's Family Fest and Walk for Kidneys is a free, community-wide, family-friendly event to highlight education and prevention of kidney disease as well as awareness of the need for organ donation. The event is a 5k (3.2mi) non-competitive walk taking place on Saturday, September 27 at 8 am. 2014 will mark our fourth year for this successful event which brings more than 1,000 participants who come to support our fight to prevent kidney disease through education and advocacy. We will also have our 1st Annual competitive run, cost will be $30 and registration will start at 7 am with the run starting at 8 am. The event will also have free kidney screening, mammogram screening and several other health fair vendors. San Antonio Pets Alive!; will be out there hosting a pet adoption as well. Smokey Joes at The woodlawn Theater

The Parks and Recreation Department’s award winning dance program is seeking new talent. The Southwest Outreach for Older People (SWOOP)
The Southwest Outreach for Older People (SWOOP) is seeking volunteer drivers to help fulfill its mission of aiding under-served seniors and caregivers in Southwest San Antonio. Transportation options for older Americans are a growing concern. Health, aging and safety issues may prevent some from continuing to drive on their own. Family members are not always available to help; limited mobility, access and fixed incomes can make public transportation a challenge. SWOOP is a non-profit program that organizes free transportation services for seniors and their caregivers by recruiting and coordinating volunteers to build a community of support and friendship that complements the efforts of families and helps fill the gaps when traditional transit options do not accommodate the special needs of seniors. 25th Anniversary Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River opens 2014 Registration
Registration for the 25th Anniversary Bike MS: Valero Ride to the River, presented by H-E-B opens Friday, April 4 with a special registration fee of $25 through April 11. The annual fundraising ride will be held October 11-12, and teams and individuals are encouraged to register and join the unforgettable journey. All registered cyclists are required to meet the minimum fundraising commitment of $300 prior to picking up their rider packet. The registration fee will increase on April 12 to $35. SApets.com just celebrated 10 years of helping the lost, found, pound, and adoptable pets of San Antonio. If your pet is lost then come to www.SApets.com and view the home page which lists current pets at the San Antonio ACS. Also while at SApets.com upload a photo and description of your lost pet and then click over to the Found page to see if someone has already found your pet. SApets.com also lists adoptable pets from several San Antonio pet rescue organizations. A new feature to SApets.com is the listing of the ACS pets that are at the Brooks kennel including maps of how to get to that kennel. Donations to SApets.com are welcome in order to help with the fees such as the annual ACS fee. SApets.com is a software database project designed and maintained by Jay Pennington which just celebrated 10 years of helping San Antonio's lost pets get back home resulting in fewer pets being put down in the shelters. SAAF Run and Walk for AIDS
This year the Run & Walk for AIDS, benefiting the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF) will be held on Saturday, September 27th and will begin and end at the Blue Star Complex in the King William District. The 5K run will begin at 7:30AM and the 2-mile walk will begin at 8:00AM with music, booths and activities located at Blue Star's parking lot. The Run & Walk for AIDS was founded in 1991 in what was formally known as Walk for Life. Each year, hundreds of South Texans gather to celebrate life and to raise funds for SAAF. The Run & Walk for AIDS promotes awareness and generates funds that allow SAAF to continue its pursuit of providing compassionate medical care and social services to people with HIV/AIDS and to help prevent the spread of HIV through education and free HIV testing. This is a day for family, friends, co-workers and even pets to join in and support SAAF while promoting community awareness. Last year several hundred people gathered together and in 2014 we are anticipating a significant increase in attendance. On Tuesday, October 21 the Y.E.L.L. (Youth Engaging in Leadership & Learning) Foundation will host its 6th Annual Youth Summit at the AT&T Center. Doors will open at 8AM. This ONE-DAY event is open to middle and high school students living in Bexar county and surrounding cities. We expect more than 3,000 students in attendance. This San Antonio based non-profit hosts this summit each year to enlighten youth, challenge their minds, and provide educational programs that help them become successful leaders.
