Military Families: Paternity, Child Support and Parenting Time BriefingAn Introduction to The Help Establishing Responsive Orders And Ensuring Support For Children In Military Families (HEROES) Project
You are specially invited to this important briefing about Texas military families' unique issues and challenges related to the IV-D system. Breakfast will be served for all registrants from 7:30 am - 8:30 am prior to the briefing, which begins at 8:30 am.We are fortunate to have a variety of top legal and military representatives from all over the state serving as panelists and moderators, including: Judge Marc Carter, Judge Wayne Christian, Dr. Steve Holliday, leaders from JAG and Legal Assistance Offices (Fort Hood, Fort Bliss, Joint Base San Antonio), and the Texas Office of the Attorney General.
OVERVIEW OF BRIEFINGMichael Hayes, Deputy for Family Initiatives in the Child Support Division of the Texas Office of the Attorney General (OAG), will open by providing an overview of the briefing. Dr. Cynthia Osborne, Director of the Child and Family Research Partnership (CFRP) and Associate Professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, will then provide a presentation of the broad trends of military and veteran families and describe how military service can present child support and parenting time issue in the IV-D System.The first panel is composed of JAG officers and Legal Assistance representatives who will explore the services offered through military Legal Assistance Offices, limitations of the office, and their experience working with military families. A panel of HEROES Assistant Attorneys General then will describe the unique statewide program, HEROES (Help Establishing Responsive Orders And Ensuring Support For Children In Military Families), and share their experience and expertise working with military and veteran families. The final panel will explore issues related specifically to veterans, including: their behavioral and physical health; how they should prepare for court; real court experiences; and other special issues. Each panel will have time allotted for questions from the audience.
