IntroductionJoin Ensemble Settecento in a very special performance of colonial music from New France and New Spain, presented in San Antonio's beautiful and historic Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña. Originally founded in East Texas with the purpose of halting French encroachment into Texas from Louisiana, the mission was relocated to San Antonio in 1731. With its interior recently restored to its original 1755 splendor and its cathedral-like acoustics, Mission Concepción is an ideal location for a concert of the music of colonial Mexico.Two of America's most historically significant and ethnically diverse cities, New Orleans and San Antonio, were founded in the same year, 1718. This took place near the beginning of a century that would see enormous changes in the balance of power in the New World, changes that would be both the cause and effect for changes in the Old World. One central aim of the French and Spanish colonization was the Christianization of the indigenous population -- they found music to be a most effective tool. Colonial composers (both European and New World-natives) created a great deal of music for this purpose, much of it is as beautiful and ornate as the music written in Europe.Join Central Texas’s newest early music ensemble as we explore the music of the cathedrals, convents, and missions of New France and New Spain, drawing works from the musical archives of New Orleans and Montréal, and the cathedral collections of Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Durango, and Santiago de Cuba. An Informal Pre-Concert Talk is included in the admission price. Presented by the artistic director, Billy Traylor.
